Here's the short version: if you need a precision DMM and you need it under a deadline, get the Keithley DMM6500 6.5 digit multimeter when the budget allows. The Keithley 2110 digital multimeter is the no-regrets second pick. Do not design a lab around a used oscilloscope unless you can verify calibration. Leave the HVAC multimeter in the service vehicle. And for calipers, I'd take Mitutoyo over Starrett in a quality-critical shop—not because Starrett is bad, but because Mitutoyo gives me more consistent repeatability on the bench.

That's not a garnish. It's the whole point of this article. I've been the person who gets called after another instrument vendor missed a date. The failures always share a pattern: someone optimized for price or speed at the expense of a verifiable measurement chain.

Keithley DMM6500 or Keithley 2110: the honest split

If you're measuring leakage current, small voltage differences, or anything a quality auditor will challenge, the Keithley DMM6500 6.5 digit multimeter is the safer spend. The 6.5-digit resolution and low-current capability make it a lab-grade anchor. If the bench is for general electrical debug and you don't need to measure microamp-level signals every week, the Keithley 2110 digital multimeter gets you 5.5 digits and Keithley's solid measurement core at a lower entry point.

The surprise wasn't how good the DMM6500's numbers looked. It was the digitizing mode. I started with it as a DMM, but the waveform capture saved us in a situation where a scope was unavailable. One box answered both questions. Not bad when you're on deadline.

As of March 2025, lead times for new Keithley units at authorized distributors were generally two to four weeks, but rental or demo pools can compress that to 24 hours if you need it. Verify with your local representative.

Used oscilloscopes: a yes with conditions

I have mixed feelings about used oscilloscopes. On one hand, they save serious money. On the other, an unverified used scope can cost more in debugging time than a new one costs in cash.

In 2022, I bought a used scope to save about $2,800. It looked clean. Seller had a tidy bench, good questions, and no documented issues. The first channel failed on a 10 kHz square wave—exactly the test I didn't run before paying. Looking back, I should have brought a signal source and checked every channel's gain. At the time, the clean bench and reasonable seller were enough. That's on me.

So now: buy used only if the seller provides a recent calibration certificate and lets you run a basic verification. "Looks fine on a power-on test" isn't a measurement. If you need the instrument for a compliance submittal, don't buy used at all—rent or borrow a calibrated unit instead. Used scopes are for non-critical bench, hobby work, or as a second view. Not for a formal qualification.

HVAC multimeter: right tool, wrong bench

An HVAC multimeter does its job well. It's designed to handle line voltage, thermocouples, and hard outdoor abuse. Its place is on a ladder, not next to a power rail.

I've seen a team send a product back to engineering because a $180 HVAC meter showed 30 mV of noise on a 3.3 V rail. The meter wasn't defective. It was the wrong tool—its DC offset on a low-impedance source is fine for compressors, not for circuit validation. That false alarm cost three hours of investigation and an unnecessary email chain. The tool in the photo of the failed board was an HVAC meter. The customer didn't know the difference. They just saw a "test" that didn't reflect the product's actual quality.

Mitutoyo vs Starrett calipers: what I actually recommend

This debate always gets loud, but here's where I land after years of calibrating both: Mitutoyo wins for consistency in a production/shop floor environment. Their digital calipers tend to hold zero better after repeated use, and their calibration reports are straightforward. Starrett makes excellent tools—particularly dial calipers, which I enjoy using—but I've seen Starrett dials lose zero after a couple of hard knocks on a bench. That matters when the calipers are the final check before a part ships.

Before you pick, ask: who reads the caliper and what will they do with the reading? If it's a QC person documenting dimensions, Mitutoyo's lower-profile button layout makes accidental unit switches less likely. If it's a toolmaker who calibrates the caliper before every read, either brand is fine.

What I do not do is let calipers be an afterthought. Mechanical tools often sit outside the formal calibration system, and that's a mistake. A dimension off by 0.05 mm on a cosmetic part can turn into a customer returns issue. The caliper is an extension of the brand's quality image.

When this advice stops being right

This is the part where I sound less definitive on purpose. If you're debugging high-frequency RF, a used scope won't do and an HVAC meter is irrelevant. If you're an HVAC contractor, an HVAC multimeter is the exact right tool; don't buy a benchtop Keithley for a rooftop. If you're making quick fixture measurements that no customer will audit, the cheapest reliable caliper is enough.

Look, I'm not saying budget options are always wrong. I'm saying match the measurement to the risk. When the instrument is the last line of defense before a customer sees a product, spend what the confidence costs. That's not a moral point. It's a business one. In my experience, the $50 you save on the wrong meter shows up later as a $5,000 warranty issue or a lost client.

That's where I stop. If you're on a deadline, verify calibration, buy the DMM6500 if you can, keep the HVAC meter in the service van, be careful with used scopes, and check the calipers' zero before every critical read.
